Course description:
This course introduces students to several non-traditional approaches used to treat emotional and psychological problems including relaxation, music and movement therapies, light, drama and psychodrama, art therapy, hypnosis, and recreational therapy. Students will be introduced to emerging and intermodal expressive therapy and there will be a focus on experience, understanding and application of expressive therapy techniques among a variety of clinical populations. Indications and contraindications for each of various therapeutic models are explored. In addition, the course covers new trends of therapy in the field of mental health such as body-mind therapies, play therapy, biofeedback, sex therapy, naturopathic therapy, and others. Role-playing and in-class practice and training will be the main approach to class teaching.
Learning objectives:
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1.Identify and articulate theories and concepts of intermodal of complementary and alternative therapies.
2.Understand the indications and contraindications of the various kinds of alternative and complementary therapies that are used in mental health field.
3.Efficiently use some of the alternative therapies when treating clients with emotional problems and mental disorders
4.Explore how culture impacts value development, and how values and customs are encountered and addressed in alternative therapy work.
