Course Description
The course deals with an overview of basic elements of group process, with a focus on stages of group development, including coverage of introduction to group work; guidelines for multicultural practice; ethical and professional issues in group practice; group leadership; early stages of groups; and later stages of groups. The course is a combination of didactic and experiential elements, including demonstrations, short lectures, questions and answers, and discussions of group process concerns. There will be a focus on the stages in the evolution of groups, which include forming a group, or the pre-group phase; initial stage; transition stage; working stage; and; ending a group, including final and follow-up stages. Various theories will also be explored throughout the course duration.

The course entails supervised experience as a co-leader of groups, with opportunities for group supervision and discussion on the nature of the work of group leading. The goal of the course is to provide an integration of concepts and skills; theory is applied to actual practice of group work. To accomplish this, the course consists of brief lectures on each theory (followed by a demonstration group and discussion of the demonstration); opportunities to co-lead groups with peers with supervision and ongoing feedback; participation in demonstrations of various group models; experiential practice in a weekly group.

1.Practice in the use of skills and techniques applicable to various counseling situations
2.Identify the major tasks of group leadership at each of the stages of a group and identify the major functions and roles of co-leaders
3.Identify the roles and expectations of group members at the various stages of a group
4.Participate in a supervised practice in facilitating a group session
5.Identify the different stages of group development and explain the characteristics of each of the respective stages
6.Identify the various types of groups and the purposes and functions of each type of group
