This course focuses on ways that minority groups within the United States have struggled for rights and justice. We will look at these issues principally through the lens of history, but there will be attention to contemporary issues as well, including the connections between the struggle for rights in the U.S. and the struggle for rights in Palestine.
The following are key learning outcomes for this course. By the end of the semester, all students should be able to:
· Show familiarity with significant events and trends in the history of specific racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities in the United States
· Describe the distinctive features of American pluralism, as well as the similarities and differences between issues of rights and respect between the U.S. and other places, including within Palestinian society
· Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of American society in relation to issues of liberty, equality, and human dignity.
· Offer brief, cogent written analyses of texts in the context of U.S. history and culture
· Synthesize ideas and trends regarding race, ethnicity and religion from across a broad spectrum of American society and history
